If you enjoy writing and have information you feel is helpful to others, you may consider starting your own web log or “blog” for short. A blog is like a diary. You make regular entries, sharing your experiences, thoughts and ideas with others across the internet. If your blog is successful, you can build a considerable following.
Setting Up a Blog
Many people become overwhelmed with the idea of building their own website, but the truth is, it is very simple. In fact, it took me less than 15 minutes to purchase a domain name, setup this blog and start writing my first post.
Creating a Free Blog with Blogger
Starting a blog doesn’t have to be expensive either. I purchased a domain name with Go Daddy for $1.49 using a promotional code. Simply do a search for “$1.49 Go Daddy Domain” in your favorite search engine and you will find lots of codes to use. Then I created a free blog at Blogger, mapped my Go Daddy domain to Blogger following these instructions and here we are.
If you want a more robust blogging platform, you should consider WordPress. WordPress is a free open-source software that gives you many options to create a complex and dynamic blog. There are two options for creating a blog with WordPress:
- Have WordPress hosted for free at WordPress.com
- Install free WordPress software on a paid hosting account (such as Go Daddy, Host Gator or BlueHost)
Making Money with a Blog
There are various ways to make money with a blog. Here we will talk about some of the most common and simple ways you can make money by blogging.
Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertising
Probably the easiest way to monetize your blog is with PPC advertising. The two most common advertising networks are Google Adsense and Yahoo/Bing Media.net. Adding an advertisement to your blog is as simple as cutting and pasting the code provided by the advertising network.
Many businesses offer affiliate programs. By becoming an affiliate you can make money by selling the products and services of someone else. The key to being a successful affiliate is to offer products and services that are relevant to your content.
